3D Oil Paintings
THE MYSTERY BEHIND SEEING 3 DIMENSIONALLY
It is intriguing how each individual views the three dimensional effect of this style of painting. Some see immediately the 3d quality and have no hesitation falling deliriously into the depths of the illusion, while others may take some time, perhaps even needing some coaxing into the 3d worlds that teases before them, until it magically appears before their eyes. I have several of my own theories, it may be purely physical depending on the balance and the strength of the two eyes of the individual, (often I suggest for the viewer to cover one eye with a hand and move from side to side while looking at the painting). But recently I am beginning to consider that theres more than meets the eye (excuse the pun), it may go a little deeper, perhaps it is the type of person you are….do you fall easily into fantasy worlds and fiction, allowing yourself to venture beyond what you understand, or do you prefer to hold onto a solid sense of reality? The jury is still out with what the answer is, but it is fun to continue to speculate and to witness the different reactions from individuals, endeavoring to find ways to aid those who may need a few moments to suspend their hold on reality before they can fully enjoy these three dimensional oil paintings!
INSPIRATION
"Painting is an enthralling exploration. I find creativity to be my best medicine, I love to constantly explore new ideas, finding the greatest joy in those moments when the painting I am working on comes to life on the canvas and takes on a life of it's own. As a visual artist, I am always looking for a way to transcend the limits of a traditional canvas to express my ideas on. In 1964 an ingenious British artist Patrick Hughes first invented and pioneered the concept “Reverse Perspective” that utilizes 3 dimensional surfaces to help create optical illusions. Inspired by this possibility, after spending numerous months of sketching, I created the correct planes and angles that would be necessary. Painting directly onto the canvas installation that I custom built, the effect is deliriously captivating. The paintings really come to life when you walk from side to side, the walls and perspective of the images seemingly move, creating a 3d effect that gives you a feeling that you can walk right up and inside of the painting, thru archways, along pathways to venture into the dreamscapes of my imagination. I like to think of this series as Dreaming in 3D." Steve Sundram
